Aspects of Identity in Legally Blonde
I've noticed, watching the Legally Blonde movie for the 100th time, that many aspects such as "class" and "gender" are clearly indicated throughout the movie.
This shows misjudgment of gender roles, as Elle is immediately mistreated based off her appearance and how she represents herself, as she comes off as a 'dumb blonde.' Although she worked just as hard to get into the school as everyone else, she is being singled out for how she dresses and where she comes from.
Later in the clip, Elle goes on to meet more people and finds herself in a circle with other students introducing herself. Following the other students' introductions, they talk about their accomplishments and everything they've done academically. As soon as Elle starts to speak, everyone judges her. You can see this, as there are close-up shots of each character's face reacting to what she's saying as she's talking. Each character has a judging or confused lo ok on their face during these shots. The final clip shows a three-person shot to show audience the reactions of their faces at the same time to get the full interpretation of what the characters think about Elle and her introduction.
Class is also heavily represented in this clip because Elle is clearly dressed in high-end clothes and carries her personal dog-who also happens to be wearing clothes-with her, which is something that the average person who not be able to afford. The other students in the clip are dressed much more casual in comparison to Elle who is all dressed up in bright pink. These other students can be assumed to be in a lower class than Elle based off not only how they are dressed themselves compared to her, but also based on how they react to her bougee lifestyle.
